Seminar in Lüttich 2026

Seminar in September

This year, the Aikido seminar in Liège-Sclessin with Maurizio Volpe and Bernhard Boll took place as early as the end of September. The chosen date proved to be a perfect choice, as the weather was still warm and summery, with hardly a cloud in the sky. The two instructors had driven there with their wives and met up on Friday evening—at the usual hotel near Guillemins station—with Hans-Jürgen and Volker from Trebur, who were also accompanied by their partners; they had conveniently taken the train from Frankfurt to Guillemins.
We were all warmly welcomed by a group of Aikidoka from Sclessin, including Fabrizio, Valentina, Willy, Nino, and others. In the evening, we drove to an Italian restaurant in the city center. Fortunately, Valentina volunteered to drive the Swiss car through the city's heavy and often stop-and-go traffic. The intended parking garage was already full and closed off, so we had to use an older facility with very narrow ramps. The driver mastered this extremely difficult task with flying colors.
The meal at the Italian restaurant was excellent, though the atmosphere was quite noisy.

Training

The training schedule covered techniques for the 4th Dan, as well as supplementary material from the 3rd Kyu syllabus for the younger aikidoka. Maurizio and Bernhard took turns leading the lessons and supported one another.
On Saturday, four aikidoka took Ki examinations. Willy (CHUDEN), Giuseppe L. (OKUDEN), Hans-Jürgen H. (JODEN), and Volker B. (JODEN) all passed. Congratulations !
All Dan-grade practitioners, as well as numerous 1st Kyu students, participated in the sessions for instructors. At the start of the first lesson for everyone, Bernhard presented the JODEN certificate to Michel, and Maurizio presented the OKUDEN certificate to Fabrizio.

Gastronomy

For both lunch and dinner, we visited "Le Bacchus," a rather small restaurant on Avenue Théodule Gonda in Flémalle — located about 8 km west of the dojo in Sclessin, along the banks of the Meuse.
Nino had organized everything perfectly with advance reservations. We enjoyed delicious, authentic regional specialties; at dinner, meat lovers could even indulge themselves with huge cuts of raw meat to be cooked on a hot stone.
A major advantage of this small restaurant was that we had the place entirely to ourselves at lunch — and were nearly the only ones there in the evening — keeping the noise level pleasantly low.

Curiosities

It happens from time to time that aikidoka wear hakama on the mat embroidered with someone else's name rather than their own. Sometimes sempai pass their old hakama on to junior aikidoka without removing the name. Or several aikidoka order hakama together and mix them up when the package arrives. Or someone accidentally packs the wrong hakama in the changing room.
On Saturday, one aikidoka on the mat did not respond when addressed by the name embroidered on her hakama; it turned out that it was not her name. Then, on Sunday, another person arrived at the seminar wearing a hakama embroidered with the very name that belonged to the first aikidoka. At least she was eventually able to reclaim her own hakama. However, the owner of the hakama bearing the unknown name remained a mystery.

Return journey

After a wonderful, instructive seminar held in a very friendly atmosphere, the aikidoka from south of the Alps set off on their return journey at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
In Aachen, they visited the octagon of Charlemagne and enjoyed a good meal at an Italian restaurant. After overnight stays in Hachenburg (Westerwald) and in Tübingen, they arrived safely in Ticino late Tuesday afternoon and in Piedmont that evening.
It was an interesting trip, featuring two delightful days in Liège and many fascinating impressions along the way — both coming and going.
We hope to see the aikido friends we met in Liège again soon at a seminar. See you soon !
