Balerna
Our numerous and loyal friends from Italy, Germany, France, England, and Switzerland met in Balerna on the weekend of October 13-15, 2006, to participate in the international Aikido seminar, masterfully led by Doshu Kenjiro Yoshigasaki.
Even before training on the tatami began Friday evening, someone had already described this third Aikido seminar, organized by the Associazione Ticinese Ki Aikido and financed by the Solidarity Fund, as "gastronomic." It is true that this aspect is very important in this region, mainly because Ticino is rich in grottos where home-cooked food is the main focus, but also because there is a cultural tendency to emphasize that a good diet promotes quality of life, and even better when accompanied by a good wine made from grapes ripened in local vineyards: the body also wants its part.
But there is another aspect: eating and drinking together promotes conviviality, cohesion and relationships between participants, offering a moment of relaxation in which to exchange smiles and jokes, opinions and reflections.
Technology and Philosophy
But since "man does not live by bread alone," our Doshu never lacks philosophical reflections on life, humanity, nature, and that dose of "food for the mind and soul" that he knows how to provide, and that everyone takes in as best they can.
On this mild weekend, blessed by a glorious autumn sun, the Master rewarded us with a technical and philosophical seminar of the highest standard. From a technical perspective, we were able to experiment with many details that allow us to refine the execution of the art we practice. From a philosophical perspective, the Doshu offered many ideas for reflection on the non-material aspect of existence. In this way, all who want and are able to do so can become increasingly aware and acquire the ability to realize harmony, humanity, and respect for life in all its forms in their daily lives.
Misogi
On Sunday morning, the aikido practitioners participated in the Misogi purification meditation with the Doshu, whose intensity left no one indifferent. Each participant was surely touched by these profound vibrations.
The seminar ended with a feeling of great fulfillment that everyone could treasure in their hearts. Afterwards, many friends gathered again to spend a moment at the Grotto del Mulino and enjoy a delicious lunch before heading home.
Acknowledgements
On behalf of the Associazione Ticinese Ki Aikido, I would like to thank our Doshu and all the participants who brought their smiles to Balerna, as well as everyone who contributed to the success of this seminar: Italia, Andrea, Govert, and Massi, who were always present at the dojo for any eventuality, and Adriana, who provided 20 kg of excellent local apples for everyone.
A heartfelt thank you also to all the teachers from the various associations who were on the tatami with the children of our mini-school on Saturday, attentively following the master's teachings and the adaptations of Aikido for the youngest. Doshu dedicated himself to a particularly interesting lesson and was very well received by our "little samurai."
Thanks also to
the municipality of Balerna and the school for providing the gym and related services free of charge;
the florist Ennio Camponovo, who gave us a beautiful floral arrangement;
Mrs. Claudine Schamberger Maggi, who hosted our Doshu at her B&B Le Rose; she reduced the bill by 50% for the benefit of the event;
Anna del Furmighin, Angela del Grotto del Mulino, and Laura & René Schuler from the Ristorante Federale for their warm welcome and the preparation of excellent meals;
the Associazione Ticinese Ki Aikido, which donated chocolate and mineral water;
Each and every one of them will remain in my heart and thoughts for a long time to come.
See you soon, a warm hug to everyone.
