眠狂四郎
Nemuri Kyōshirō

1963 - 1969

Nemuri Kyōshirō

(sleepy Kyōshirō) is a literary character that Renzaburō Shibata (1917-1978) described in 7 novels and 8 short stories since 1956. The stories take place under Tokugawa Ienari (*1773-1841) and Tokugawa Ieyoshi (*1793-1853).

Shibata was a nihilist, which is reflected in the dry and tough logic of his stories. His hero makes no moral demands on himself. He struggles with his origins and finds the world meaningless. He kills countless people, "always just because they want to kill him".
Shibata takes jabs at Christianity, which had long been banned in Japan at that time because it was a threat to the state. Sometimes, however, humanity and cautious optimism shine through in Nemuri Kyoshiro's action.

There were numerous film adaptations in Japan with the main actors Tsuruta Kōji (1956–1958), Ichikawa Raizo (1963–1969), Matsukata Hiroki (1969), Tamura Masakazu (1979 ff), Kataoka Takao (1982–1983) and others.
The following presents the 12 episodes with the excellent Kabuki actor Ichikawa Raizō VIII. They were marketed internationally under the title "Sleepy Eyes of Death". In the West they were less successful than, for example, the Zatoichi films. This is probably due to the misogynistic and anti-Christian content of the stories. Large massacres against numerous enemies are typical, of which appear always several in each episode. However, it must be acknowledged that the sword choreography is very well done. Culturally, you learn little new about Japan; Nemuri's attitude to life is too negative for that. However, one gets the impression that the period around 1830 in Japan was characterized by the decline of culture, impoverishment of the population, exploitation of women and corruption in the administration and in the Tokugawa family.
