The father then marries Natsuko, Hisako's younger sister. The family flees to the countryside with their servants. Mahito finds it difficult to integrate into his new surroundings. Trivia

Producer Toshio Suzuki developed the risky strategy of releasing the film in Japan without any traditional marketing or teaser trailers. Despite some doubts from Hayao Miyazaki, Suzuki stuck to his belief that modern moviegoers would find interest in the work on their own. The only advertising before the film's release on July 14, 2023 was a poster depicting the heron.
Due to the film's seven-year production period and Miyazaki's age of 82 at the time of its release, media reports described "The Boy and the Heron" as probably the last feature film by Hayao Miyazaki, who had previously announced his retirement several times. The online magazine Polygon described the film as the director's beautiful farewell letter to the film and literature world.
